The Stone Horse analysis

Barry Lopez, who wrote "The Stone Horse" is a very skilled writer. He uses many different aspects of descriptive writing in his narrative. The one example that stood out to me the most begins on the bottom of page 499 and continues on to the next page. He is describing a memory and uses literary elements to give detailed imagery. In the second to last paragraph, he uses a simile. He says, "He looked at me with stoical despair, like a man who had been robbed twice, whose belief in human beings was offered without conviction" (pg 499). On the top of the next page he then uses imagery and descriptive writing to give in depth details of his environment, emotions, and senses.
